Merlinda Elementary School

  • Before your child takes an AR quiz, they should have read their book multiple times.
  • Have them read it to you aloud.
  • Ask them questions about the story (who, what, when, where, why) as they read.
  • After your child reads their book, discuss it with them.
  • Have them retell you the story, giving details.
  • The more your child talks about the book, the better their comprehension will be.

Accelerated Reader (AR)

Accelerated Reader

The Accelerated Reader program is a computerized program that tests reading comprehension. Students select books on their reading level, read independently, and take an independent comprehension test on the computer. Each book is worth a certain number of points based on its length and reading level. Students get a percentage of these points based on how many of the test questions they get right. The program tracks their progress over the course of the school year.

AR quizzing

Each class visits the library on a weekly basis. Your child will be checking out books that they can bring home to read with you. When they are finished, they will return the book to school and take an AR quiz. Check with your teacher to find out your class' library day and what your teacher expects for quizzing. Some of our older students may be able to take more than one quiz per week. The more you read, the more you'll succeed!

Parents are able to monitor  their child's progress in AR through Renaissance Home Connect. Follow the link above and enter your child's student id# along with their password. You will be able to see which books they have tested and what they scored. You can also go to "Email Setup", add your email address, and HomeConnect will send you an email each time your child takes a quiz to let you know how they did!

AR Quick Links

AR Book Finder

Your child should try to consistently read books that are at their appropriate reading level. ARBookfinder is a great website that will tell you what level a book is, if it is in the AR system. Whether they are books from your own home, books from the local library, or books from your teacher's class library, you can find out the AR level. Just head to ARBookFinder and type in the title of your book to find out if it is in the system and to find out its AR level. If the book is in the AR system, your child can take a quiz after reading.
